Monthly Makers Something I’ve Never Tried Before / Underwater Crystals

Ok so this past month has basically been me a) being sick b) painting. Because I’ve become obsessed with painting with watercolours! It’s SO MUCH FUN and calming and a lot more relaxing for the eyes than digitally creating.

Anyway, it feels like ~a new era~, which is fitting since the theme for this months Monthly Makers is “Something I’ve never tried before”. I think this might be one of my favourite themes we’ve ever had! Such a fun concept! (Ironically the picture above isn’t really made with classic watercolours but watercolour crayons we’ve had all my life but anyway.) At first I was just going to make the whole concept of abstract watercolours as my creation for this month, but I felt like I would EXPLODE if I weren’t allowed to tell anyone about it until today, so I just threw that out the window and decided I’d come up with something else for Monthly Makers this month.  Consequently I spent some time trying to come up with new ways to create where I could still paint (did I mention I was obsessed?). I even tried painting with coffee (I wanted to write covfefe haha), wine and vinegar. It smelled LOVELY. Especially since the wine was an old bottle of cheap cooking wine I found. :))) Anyway, as you can see the result was kind of underwhelming for someone who loves working in bright colours. So I left that. A few days later I thought I’d try a technique I’ve seen my sister work with when she’s been painting with watercolour – negative painting. Negative painting basically means you paint around the shapes you want, and you can get really beautiful effects by painting a pretty gradient first and then another layer where you paint “around” the leaves or whatever you want.

I made something similar but created something abstract!I also used a lot of salt. Because salt and watercolour is the FREAKING MEANING OF LIFE OMG. After they had dried I went over them with white Posca and just a black pen and drew some patterns and they were done!

And here’s the finished result! I really like the colours but think they look a little bit sloppy and messy in a way. But I still like them!!

For June the theme is SOMETHING I’VE NEVER TRIED BEFORE and Julia is hosting. Comment on her post here with a link to your creation before 28/7 to be a part of the compilation. Åh så härligt. Både färg och mönster blir man glad av. Och man kan titta lääänge och ändå hitta nåt nytt.
